Velcro, ook wel Beluga genoemd, is een grote 10-jarige kruising die eindelijk het geluk van een gezinsleven ervaart. Maar voordat hij naar zijn nieuwe thuis kan, moet de dappere hond meer dan 700 dagen in het asiel wachten voordat iemand hem eindelijk opmerkt.
Omdat hij groot en niet meer de jongste is, heeft het hondje moeite om potentiële adoptanten te enthousiasmeren, ondanks zijn vele goede eigenschappen. Hij heeft bovendien een rustige omgeving nodig die past bij zijn wat aangetaste gezondheid: Velcro lijdt aan artrose vanwege zijn gevorderde leeftijd en heeft ook enkele neurologische problemen.
Ze horen bij elkaar
De hoop om voor hem het juiste thuis te vinden, is dus klein, maar de organisatie "Austin Pets Alive" is ervan overtuigd dat hij op een dag de juiste persoon zal vinden. Jeanette, een 75-jarige vrouw, heeft zojuist haar twee oudere honden verloren en kan zich geen dagelijks leven zonder de aanwezigheid van een hond meer voorstellen.
Door zich aan te bieden als tijdelijke pleegmoeder, kan Jeanette de grote hond mee naar huis nemen en kijken of alles goed werkt. Al snel merken ze dat ze bij elkaar horen en Velcro komt meteen tot leven als hij de tuin van zijn nieuwe thuis ontdekt.
Ondanks haar 75 jaar geniet de hondenliefhebster ervan om met haar nieuwe viervoetige vriend buiten te spelen en rond te rennen. Ze hebben ontzettend veel plezier en het lijkt bijna alsof een klein meisje met haar puppy speelt.
Met deze video, die de harten van meer dan een miljoen gebruikers op TikTok heeft geraakt, wil Jeanette aandacht vragen voor de talloze seniorhonden in het asiel die bijna niemand bekijkt. Ze hoopt dat ze zoveel mogelijk mensen kan verduidelijken dat oude honden nog heel veel liefde te geven hebben.

With his older age came some arthritis and an unknown background likely contributed to some trust issues and progressive neurological/musculoskeletal challenges. His ideal home would be slow paced, just like him! And come with a patient and understanding human. He wasn't the only one looking for a companion; Jeanette recently lost her two senior pups and was ready to open her home to another senior pet in need. At 75 years young, she needed a low-energy dog to share her home with and spoil to her heart's content. Soon after meeting, Jeanette welcomed Velcro into her home under foster care with the intention of adopting. The foster-to-adopt process allows both APA! and the foster parent to help the dog acclimate to a new environment by providing at-home behavior consults and lifelong adoption support. Jeanette hopes her adoption story will encourage other people to not overlook special needs and senior dogs. "They deserve love and they give as much as they get," she stated. "They respond to love just as well, if not more than younger dogs. Velcro has adopted me… he has chosen me."
